ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This listing is for an antique metal cross from Ukraine or Russia. Such crosses were worn throughout a large region as part of traditional folk costumes together with other necklaces and elements of jewelry. Also used by religious persons as part of devotional wear. Typically a large cross such as this would be too heavy to incorporate into a necklace so it would hang on a ribbon or chain separately. There is a loop on the back through which the ribbon or chain would go, though it is somewhat worn down from decades of use. The size of this cross makes is particularly desirable and rare and would have been a very special piece for the person who owned it. There is a prayer on the back. I suspect it dates to the beginning of the 20th century and is likely over 100 years old. In beautiful condition and a fine addition to your ethnic jewelry or religious memorabilia collection. Measures 5" x 3".
CONDITION: Good condition overall with some patina and aging. The loop on the back is worn down and has an opening. I have not cleaned the cross in any way and it is sold in as-found condition. The photos show the exact condition.
A note regarding condition: All of the costumes and textiles that I sell are vintage and have typically seen decades of use resulting in expected wear and tear that add to the history and authenticity of each piece. In case of above-average wear, I will mention any significant damages and heavy signs of use. Depending on the age, materials, and condition, I often hand-wash more durable, colorfast cotton and linen textiles, deals but embellished garments, heavier wool pieces or items made from silk or fine fabrics are sold in the original, unwashed condition. Small holes or stains, missing sequins/beads, worn trim, and other marks related to standard wear are common and do not detract from the value of most pieces. Please keep in mind that a vintage textile or garment in very good condition might still show signs of use, storage and age.
