One real preserved Taxidermy Dried Large Puffer Blowfish Porcupine Fish Lighting Animal Specimen Pendant Light Lamp. This thing is a pretty crazy looking! Some of the spines are over an inch long and its skin is covered with dark brown blotches which are its natural coloring. Translucent gossamer fins stick out to the side like ears. These taxidermied fish are about 7 to 10 inches long and 6 inches wide and have been puffed out, dried, and clear protective coating applied. Each fish has the same basic look but varies slightly in the shape it has been dried and may have holes in areas, especially by the gill slits and under the tail, sometimes other places. There are no perfect fish, each one is unique, but all are sturdy and solid.
A hole has been drilled out of the hard skin at the top and a pendant lamp light fixture inserted directly inside the animal. The light has a 6 foot silver cord with inline deals rotary on/off switch and takes easy to find standard nightlight candelabra bulbs. The light assembly is clipped into the top of the fish and can be easily removed by pinching the clips, in case of need of bulb change. Comes with a length of fishing line attached for hanging. For such a delicate looking things, puffer fish are actually fairly strong and stiff and the spines can poke you but good so be careful when unpacking. All internal parts of this fish have been removed through a slit at the top of the fish that was then patched up with translucent wire and dark colored sealant to match the dark spots on the fish. When the lamp is lit, the patched area is visible as an erratic black line along the top of the fish. Sometimes other areas are also patched with dark sealant, especially near the fins where the gill slits used to be or will have small holes. Artificial eyes have been attached to the sides of the 'face' to add to the weird macabre look. The artificial eyes are placed where the real eyes once were. No fishy odor, just a light polyurethane smell if you hold the item close to your nose. Photos are stock photos. You won't get this exact puffer fish but one very similar.
When alive, the flesh of the puffer fish is highly toxic due to tetrodotoxin, a poison that is 10 times more dangerous than cyanide. It is estimated that one puffer fish can contain enough poison to kill 30 people. Yet the Japanese consider puffer fish to be a delicacy when properly prepared. Every year, people die from consumption of improperly prepared puffer fish! The skin and spines by themselves as preserved here are not poisonous, just weird looking.
