RARE C 1980s Josefina Aguilar and L Demetrio G Aguilar Sculpture Frida Kahlo The Wounded Deer Clay Metal Painted Antler Break Oaxaca Mexico Artist SIGNED by Both Mother and Son
Josefina Aguilar, noted Oaxaca, Mexico clay figurine sculptor, signed this sculpture of the 1946 painting by Frida Kahlo, “The Wounded Deer,” with Frida's face on a deer with arrows shot into its body. There is no date on the piece but likely 1980s. Painted background and face, blood on deer body, and ground. Trees are carved with some paint. Also, the reverse is signed by L. Demetrio Garcia Aguilar, her son. So this is a joint work by the two, perhaps started by one person and finished by the other.
Condition note: There is a break to the right antler – the piece is included, and the broken piece is missing a smaller antler piece, and the left antler has a hairline crack. So this sculpture has deals some damage, but it is still striking and poignant.
