Resplendent, very unusual Victorian brush and mirror set made of molded, gold-toned metal. The backs are painted enamel with an unusual torch and laurel wreath motif. I'm not quite sure what it represents, if anything: I've seen a torch many times in 18th and 19th century French decorative objects and design, from moldings to frames and even as a Limoges pattern. Since antiquity, it has been associated with freedom, enlightenment, and hope, as in the case of the Statue of Liberty- which I might remind you, was French! There was also the Greek and Roman custom of the wedding torch, in which the bride carried a torch lit from her own home in the wedding procession, and used that torch to light the hearth of her married home. Whatever its meaning may be, if any, the set is extremely unusual and beautiful. Condition is good with a little clouding to the mirror and wear to the enamel.
