Albert Ràfols-Casamada (Barcelona, 1923-2009) was one of the most significant and multifaceted contemporary Catalan artists. He was initiated in drawing and painting by his father, Albert Ràfols Cullerés. After a few years of studying architecture, he opted for painting and exhibited for the first time in Barcelona deals in 1946 with the group Els Vuit. In 1950 he obtained a grant from the French government and moved to Paris, where he lived until 1954. Back in Barcelona, he soon began an intense exhibition activity and in 1961 he held his first exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (1960-1963).
With a long pictorial and literary career and an extensive and renowned artistic work, Ràfols-Casamada had the ability to integrate the best of Henri Matisse and American abstract expressionism in a highly coherent chromatic search. Although his artistic career began in the field of figuration, with time he evolved towards an abstraction in which colour and the use of geometric structures had an important weight. In the late fifties and early sixties, he made his first collages and opted for a new chromatic austerity with a predominance of white. In the nineteen-eighties, now in full creative maturity, he once again incorporated the use of signs with a strong symbolic and aesthetic component, and reinforced the protagonism of colour.
His pedagogical activity in the field of design and art began in 1962 at the Elisava School and, later, at the EINA School, which he founded in 1967 together with a group of intellectuals, teachers and artists following the pedagogical model of the Bauhaus. He was its director for seventeen years. Although his literary career was late (he published his first book of poems in 1976), he cultivated different genres, such as essays and poetry, and worked as an illustrator of Catalan literary classics. In 2000, Proa brought together all his poetic work in a single volume: Signe d'aire: obra poètica (1939-1999). (thanks to www.macba.cat )
