More than half of cork worldwide comes from the Cork Oak forests found in Portugal. Thanks to the environmental conditions of the Mediterranean region, such as rainfall, wind, and soil fertility, the oak forests of Portugal develop very well.
It's because of the environment that the Mediterranean region is considered the most important location for the Cork Oak trees.
A Cork tree must be at least 14 years old before its cork cam be harvested. 12 years following a harvest, new and thicker bark will replace old bark with a smoother finish and can be up to 70 milimeters thick. This means that the production of each Cork product is a 10-25 year process. The harvesting of Cork from these trees does not hurt the trees! Cork can be harvested for the entire natural lifespan of the tree, deals which is 200 years!
Cork Oak trees can grow as high as 6 meters, with and approximate diameter of 40 millimeters. When the tree is old, a new Cork tree is planted to eventually take the old tree's place, which prevents the depletion of this amazing natural resource, Cork!
