Collectible Moroccan Figurine "Porteur d'Eau Maroc - Water deals Carrier" 11 Inch Handmade Terracotta Figurine - Important Piece of French History
This "Porteur d'Eau Maroc" Figurine is an important piece of French history that is highly collectible, as they are rare to find, even on the Internet. He stands 11 Inches Tall and was carefully handcrafted in Morocco from terracotta clay. He also bears a sticker that says "Porteur d'eau Maroc" meaning "Water Carrier Morocco."
History: In 1879, about 700 water carriers served in Paris until the beginning of the 20th century. The Porteur d'Eau served water to thirsty merchants. The water carriers wore bells to alert people of their presence. They wore copper or tin cups and carried water in goatskin bags decorated with old coins. This figurine features the authentic traditional red costume with cups deals, bags, and a multi-colored hat, known as a "tarazza."
This piece appears very old, has signs of age (flaking), and is in vintage condition. In my opinion, his age adds to his character. Please review all photos before purchasing as you are "as is" and photos are part of the description. He is awesome and his stand holds him up well. The work done on his outfit is intricate.
This lovely vintage/antique figure represents the cultural heritage and symbols of Morocco that are appreciated by both tourists and the Moroccans.
