Noh theatre is a traditional Japanese theatrical form and one of the oldest theatrical forms in the world. Noh developed from ancient forms of dance drama and festival drama at shrines and temples by the 12th or 13th Century. Rather than being actors in the Western sense, Noh performers are simply storytellers who use their visual appearances and movements to suggest the essence deals of their tale rather than enact it.
The great Soprano Beverly Sills once said, "Art is the signature of civilizations." In this turbulent time, so many beautiful works could be lost due to natural disasters, war, apathy and ignorance. I began this suite of paintings as an homage to the creators of such extraordinary pieces that are the signatures of their culture.
