This is a beautiful antique oil painting by listed Italian artist Francesco Berlingieri, who was active in Naples in the 1920s and 1930s before World War 2. Most of his paintings were signed, as this one, "F. Berlingieri," and usually fall into several genres: images from classical antiquity (like this one), alrical, portraits, or scenes of Italian life. This painting of a classical soldier wearing the traditional red military cloak (the paludamentum) of commanders, as well as the brimless conical cap (the pileus) are often seen depicted on images of Ulysses (known as Odysseus in Greek). Also, a nearly identical portrait of the same figure sold at auction in Germany in 2017 and was entitled "Ulysses" on the back of the painting by the artist. Berlingieri specialized in paintings of a portable size sold to tourists in the early 1900s. His paintings deals sell for up to $1500. This painting measures 9.75" wide x 14" high. The gold plaster over wood frame measures 14.75" x 19" x 1.5".
