Rare to find complete vintage set of Biographies and legends of the New England Indians paperback books, by Leo Bonfanti. Volume I: Biographical sketches of several 17th century Indian leaders, plus brief chapters on the probable origins of the New England Indians, their stages of development, and their political divisions. Volume II: A review of the causes that led to the start of the King Philip War, as well as an account of the first weeks of hostilities. Volume III: Histories of the so-called Praying Indians and the Nipmucks, and an account of the King Philip War in the Connecticut Valley through the late fall of the first year. Volume IV: The Colonies declare war against the Narragansetts, then with the largest task force ever assembled to this date, attack the Narragansett fort at South Kingston, R.I. and slaughter most of the women and children in the action known as the Great Swamp Massacre. The war grinds on, and with the death of Philip, the dis-organized bands of resistors are defeated, destroying the southern New England Indians as threats to the future well-being of the New England colonies. Volume V: Sometimes called the Eastern War, this conflict began in September of 1675 when two English sailors murdered and infant son of Squando, Sachem of Saco, and ended in August of 1677 when Governor Andros of New York sent two warships and a company of soldiers to Pemaquid, Maine to force the Indian leaders to sign a peace treaty.
