After rolling the leaf and applying the label, the assembly is cast under pressure in crystal clear acrylic resin. A lathe was used to turn the hardened resin to the desired shape by hand, and carefully matched to the adjoining hardware. After sanding through 12 increasingly fine steps to a glass smooth 12,000 grit, the pen was then given a final micro polish to achieve the high gloss, wear resistant finish you see.
