The empty wagon is making its way through the shallow water to cross to the meadow on the other side where haymakers are at work. The painting was originally titled Landscape Noon. Completed in deals 1821, depicting a rural scene based on Constable's childhood home on the Rover Stour between Suffolk and Essex. Constable was one of the first artists of the Romantic movement to create landscape paintings from nature rather than dramatic depictions.
