The Springtime Ascot Hills paintings deals were the first works I made when the City of Los Angeles shelter in place orders were issued in March 2020. I was afraid of getting infected with the virus, so I mostly stayed in my studio making work and did not venture out into the world. Art stores were closed and I painted on every blank canvas I could find in my studio.
When I started this twelve inch square, acrylic on canvas series, I kept telling myself that I was painting away my fear. These paintings were a meditation for me. I laid the canvasses on the floor, cleared my mind of all thoughts and squeezed the paint directly from the tube onto the canvas. I rhythmically tapped a pallet knife on the canvas to spread the paint and create blended fields of color and texture.
These paintings were created intuitively. I did not have a plot or plan prior to making them. However, after this series was complete, I had a sudden realization while driving in the Ascot Hills, near my studio in North East Los Angeles. These paintings were inspired by the beauty of springtime! The Ascot Hills are only green for a short while before turning brown in summer, fall and winter. Each spring it is such a joy to see so much green!
I am writing this as we enter the winter season. The virus is still with us and the number of cases is steadily increasing in California as well as the rest of the United States and many parts of the world. This will be a long winter and I will spend most of my time isolated in my studio making new work. I look forward to seeing the green hills of Ascot Park in the spring of 2021. Hopefully by then we will have a vaccine or cure.
This painting is ready to hang on a screw, or nail. It is signed, dated and titled on the back. Please note that the sides of the canvas were not deliberately painted, but may have some random drips/smudges of color that occur as a natural part of my painting process.
