ABOUT AQUAMARINE

Aquamarine is one of the better-known varieties of Beryl and comes in a range of blue and green hues. Aquamarine clarity ranges from transparent to translucent with an outstanding vitreous luster. Natural aquamarine beads are usually lighter in saturation and green to greenish-blue in color. It obtains its color from iron impurities.

Aquamarine was named for the Latin words 'Aqua', meaning water, and 'Marina', meaning 'of the sea', because of its gorgeous sea-like colors.

Aquamarine occasionally exhibits the chatoyancy phenomenon, more commonly referred to as the cat's eye effect. Asterism, or Star Aquamarine, also exists and is very rare and extremely valuable.

The largest Aquamarine ever cut is known as the Dom Pedro, and was cut in Ibar-Oberstein by Bernd Munsteiner in 1992. It is 13.75 inches tall by 4 inches wide and on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. (USA).

Aquamarine is mined in Brazil, Africa, Madagascar, Pakistan, Australia, the USA, and China. Aquamarine was originally mined by German immigrants to Brazil in the 1850s. The famous gem cutting center in Germany, Iber-Oberstein, grew as a result of these German immigrants needing deals lapidaries to cut the rough mined stones into beautiful faceted gems.

AQUAMARINE TREATMENT INFORMATION

Aquamarine is typically untreated, but some material may be heated to improve color or remove unwanted yellow and green tones. Aquamarine generally comes in green tones, and a significant portion of blue aquamarine has been heat-treated to obtain that color.

CARING FOR AQUAMARINE

Aquamarine should be cleaned with warm water, mild soap, and a soft cloth or brush before being laid flat to dry. Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat. Store separately from other jewelry and stones to avoid damage.
