Who cannot but appreciate the wonderful skill and exquisite subtle design of the antique Silk Society embroiderers? They always delight.
* 16.5" square
* Embroidery is done with silk threads on a light/medium weight linen
* Edges are scalloped and finished with silk hand embroidery
* Design is with a big ribbon embroidered with (what I think) are apple blossoms scattered here and there
* The embroidery stitches are the satin stitch and the inside of each flower has very small French knots
* As photographed there is one very light discoloration in deals one corner - the condition is perfect with that exception
* Approximate date is 1920's and made by the women who called themselves " the silk society"
“The common denominator of society silk pieces is that they are usually worked with glowing, single-thread silk flosses, usually soft pastel colors. In other styles of embroidery, the eye of the needle carries several strands at once. A single thread requires finer workmanship and creates finer details. Two stitches, outline stitch and satin stitch, are almost exclusively used. A technique of staggered half-size satin stitches in two closely-related colors, such as pink and rose, adds shaded effects to petals, etc.” From Hearts Desires website
